Position Description


The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture invites applications for the Dean of Research for the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES, www.taes.utk.edu). The Dean is responsible for administration of research programs within the Institute of Agriculture (www.agriculture.utk.edu). Scientists within the TAES perform basic and applied research in partnership with UT Knoxville and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory on the Institute of Agriculture campus in Knoxville and at 10 Research and Education Centers located throughout the state. The TAES consists of seven departments with more than 130 faculty and 340 technical staff and operates with an annual budget of approximately $44 million. The TAES Dean reports to the Vice President for Agriculture (the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Agriculture) and works closely with Deans of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, UT Extension, and the College of Veterinary Medicine to fulfill the Institute’s research, teaching, and outreach objectives. The TAES Dean also works closely with the UT Knoxville Office of Research on matters of institutional compliance. The Dean is expected to lead TAES to a position of national prominence in agricultural and natural resource-related research and to develop and enhance the Institute’s research programs by cultivating scholarly excellence. The Dean is also expected to develop and sustain liaisons/partnerships with individuals and institutions within the public and private sectors to enhance funding of research programs. Additional responsibilities of the Dean include:
  • Effectively communicating TAES objectives to faculty and staff to ensure rapid and efficient response to new and emerging challenges and opportunities;
  • Establishing outstanding working relationships with faculty and staff to motivate high quality research activities including, but not limited to, the procurement of external funding for research initiatives;
  • Planning, implementing, and managing the use of financial and other resources;
  • Providing leadership for development and fundraising endeavors;
  • Effectively interacting with UT Extension, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and other administrative units of the University of Tennessee;
  • Enhancing the recruitment and retention of high quality faculty and staff; and
  • Ensuring an appropriate balance of basic and applied research.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have an earned doctorate in agricultural science and natural resources or related field. Candidates are expected to have an outstanding record of research and other academic accomplishments; grantsmanship; knowledge of emerging technologies; effective administrative experience including knowledge of, appreciation for, and commitment to the philosophy and programs of land grant institutions; and the communication and public relations skills and other attributes necessary to motivate faculty and staff and lead the agricultural research programs at the University of Tennessee.
